QR Code for Spotify: Share a Track, Album, or Playlist Anywhere
You’ve got two options for sharing Spotify with a scan: Spotify’s own “Codes” (those bar-style scannables inside the app) and a regular QR code that encodes the Spotify URL. They behave differently. Here’s when to use which.
Quick comparison
| Spotify Code | Regular QR Code | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Spotify app only | Any phone camera |
| Recipient needs Spotify installed | Yes | No (opens web player as fallback) |
| Customizable colors | Limited | Yes |
| Print quality | Limited | SVG, any size |
| Works on Spotify Free | Yes | Yes |
For posters, flyers, and merch where most viewers won’t have Spotify open, the regular QR wins. For a Spotify-native audience (in-app sharing, music meetups), Spotify Codes are nicer.
Step 1: get the Spotify URL
- Open Spotify on desktop or mobile.
- Find the track / album / artist / playlist.
- Click the three-dot menu → “Share” → “Copy link.”
- You get a URL like
https://open.spotify.com/track/4u7EnebtmKWzUH433cf5Qv.
Step 2: encode as QR
Paste the URL into the QR code generator. Static QR. Download SVG.
What scanners experience
When someone scans:
- Spotify app installed: Spotify opens directly to the track/playlist.
- No Spotify app: Browser opens to
open.spotify.comwith the web player. They can listen for free without the app.
This is why static QR beats Spotify Codes for print: it works on every phone, app or no app.
Use cases
- Concert posters and gig flyers. Scan to listen before the show.
- Vinyl record inserts. Bridge physical to digital.
- Wedding invitations. Link to your shared playlist.
- Restaurant playlists. “We’re playing this — scan to add to your library.”
- Podcast distribution. Print on swag or tip jars.
- Music teacher handouts. “Listen to this etude before next class.”
Spotify Codes (the in-app option)
Spotify generates its own visual codes:
- Open the track/playlist.
- Three-dot menu → tap the cover art image at the top of the share screen.
- Save or screenshot the resulting “Spotify Code.”
To scan: open Spotify → tap Search → camera icon → point at code.
Pros: looks branded, integrates with the app. Cons: only works inside Spotify, low resolution for print.
Print specs
- Minimum 2.5 cm × 2.5 cm.
- SVG for scalable print.
- Black on white scans most reliably.
- Add a label: “Listen on Spotify” or “Scan to play.”
Track scans (sort of)
Static QRs don’t track scans. But Spotify gives you stream count per track in Spotify for Artists. If you’re an artist, monitor streams from regions where you placed flyers.
For genuine click tracking, redirect through your own domain with a UTM, then forward to Spotify. The UTM link generator handles tagging.
Common mistakes
- Encoding a Spotify URI (
spotify:track:...) instead of the URL. URIs only work inside the app. Use the https URL. - QR too small on a poster. A2 poster needs at least 5 cm × 5 cm QR.
- Linking to a region-locked track. Some tracks aren’t available in all countries. Test from a different region.
- Using a Spotify Code on a flyer. Most viewers won’t open Spotify just to scan. Use a regular QR.
FAQ
Can I encode a podcast episode QR?
Yes — same process. Copy the episode URL, generate the QR.
Will the QR work for Spotify Free users?
Yes. Free users get the same listening experience (with ads).
Does the QR break if Spotify changes the URL format?
Spotify URLs have been stable for years. The QR will keep working as long as the track/playlist exists.
Can I make a QR for a private playlist?
The URL still works for anyone who has the link, but private playlists may show as “this content isn’t available” depending on settings. Use a public or unlisted playlist.
What if the playlist gets deleted?
The QR shows an error page. Plan for permanent encoding only with permanent URLs.
