YouTube Embed with Start and End Time: Clip-Only Embeds

YouTube’s embed iframe supports start and end parameters that play only a portion of a video — say, 1:30 to 2:45. No third-party tools, no Vimeo, no clip extraction. Just two URL parameters. Here’s the full embed code with every supporting flag.

The basic embed with start and end

<iframe
  width="560"
  height="315"
  src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID?start=90&end=165"
  title="YouTube video player"
  frameborder="0"
  allow="autoplay; encrypted-media"
  allowfullscreen>
</iframe>

Replace VIDEO_ID with the YouTube video ID. start and end are in seconds — 90 = 1:30, 165 = 2:45.

Watch URL vs embed URL — they’re different

URL typeStart parameterEnd parameter
Watch (/watch?v=...)&t=90 or &t=90sNot supported
Embed (/embed/...)?start=90&end=165

For embedded clips, you must use start + end with the embed URL. The watch URL doesn’t support an end time at all.

Useful additional parameters

ParameterEffect
autoplay=1Plays immediately on page load
mute=1Muted audio (required for autoplay in modern browsers)
loop=1Loop the clip indefinitely
playlist=VIDEO_IDRequired for loop to work on a single video
controls=0Hide YouTube controls
modestbranding=1Hide YouTube logo (legacy — has limited effect now)
rel=0Limit related videos at end to same channel
cc_load_policy=1Show captions by default
iv_load_policy=3Hide annotations

Real example: muted, looping, autoplay clip

<iframe
  width="560"
  height="315"
  src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dQw4w9WgXcQ?start=43&end=58&autoplay=1&mute=1&loop=1&playlist=dQw4w9WgXcQ&controls=0"
  frameborder="0"
  allow="autoplay; encrypted-media"
  allowfullscreen>
</iframe>

This loops 15 seconds of video, muted, autoplay. Useful for product demos, hero sections, or testimonial highlights.

The autoplay rule

Browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) block autoplay with sound. To autoplay, you MUST add mute=1. Once the user clicks unmute or interacts, sound works.

Calculating start and end seconds

Convert from minutes:seconds to seconds:

  • 1:30 = 90
  • 2:45 = 165
  • 5:00 = 300
  • 1:00:00 = 3600

Or use the YouTube timestamp link generator to build the link with timestamps and read off the seconds.

Loop with playlist parameter

YouTube’s loop parameter only works in conjunction with playlist set to the same video ID:

?loop=1&playlist=VIDEO_ID

If you skip playlist, loop is ignored. Don’t ask why — that’s just how YouTube does it.

Common use cases

  • Hero sections. 10-second muted loop of your product in action.
  • Documentation clips. “Watch this 30-second segment” inside an article.
  • Testimonial reels. Cut to the best 20 seconds of a longer interview.
  • Course modules. Each lesson references a clip from a longer source.
  • Marketing pages. Loop a key moment of a demo.

Responsive embeds

Fixed width=”560″ looks bad on mobile. Wrap the iframe with the standard 16:9 responsive trick:

<div style="position:relative; padding-bottom:56.25%; height:0; overflow:hidden;">
  <iframe
    style="position:absolute; top:0; left:0; width:100%; height:100%;"
    src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID?start=90&end=165"
    frameborder="0"
    allowfullscreen>
  </iframe>
</div>

Privacy-enhanced mode

Replace youtube.com with youtube-nocookie.com to use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced domain — fewer cookies dropped before user interaction:

https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/VIDEO_ID?start=90&end=165

Useful for GDPR/cookie consent requirements.

Common mistakes

  • Using t= instead of start= in embeds. The watch URL parameter doesn’t work in iframes.
  • Forgetting mute=1 with autoplay. Browsers block muted-less autoplay. Video sits there silently.
  • Forgetting playlist=VIDEO_ID when using loop. Loop is ignored without it.
  • Using minutes instead of seconds. All time values in embed parameters are in seconds. start=1:30 won’t work.
  • Wrong video ID. Use just the ID, not the full URL.

FAQ

Will the clip appear in YouTube’s analytics as a partial watch?

It counts as a view if the user watches more than a few seconds. The “ended” event fires at the end time, not at the original video’s end.

Can I embed a YouTube Short with start/end?

Shorts are short by definition (under 60 seconds), and the embed URL works the same way for them. start/end will work but you have less room.

Does this work with playlists?

Slightly different format. Use https://www.youtube.com/embed/videoseries?list=PLAYLIST_ID — playlists don’t support start/end the same way.

Can I embed age-restricted videos?

No. Age-restricted videos refuse to embed and show “Watch on YouTube” instead.

Does end= cut off cleanly or fade out?

Cuts off cleanly at the end second. The player shows the standard “video ended” screen.

Build clip URLs in seconds

The YouTube timestamp link generator outputs the URL with start time. Add &end=... manually for clip embeds.
