vCard QR Code: Share Your Contact Info with One Scan

A vCard QR code encodes your contact details — name, phone, email, company, website — into a scannable code. Someone points their camera, taps “Add to Contacts,” and your info is saved. Way faster than typing, and works without an app on every modern phone.

What’s inside a vCard QR

The QR code holds a plain text block in vCard format:

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
N:Doe;John
FN:John Doe
ORG:Acme Inc.
TITLE:Sales Manager
TEL;TYPE=CELL:+14155552671
EMAIL:john@acme.com
URL:https://acme.com
END:VCARD

That string gets converted to a QR. Scanners read it, recognize the vCard format, and offer to save the contact.

vCard 3.0 vs 4.0

VersionCompatibilityWhen to use
vCard 3.0Universal — every scanner reads itDefault choice
vCard 4.0Newer features, slightly less compatibleOnly if you need 4.0-specific fields

Stick with 3.0 unless you have a specific reason. The compatibility difference matters more than the new fields.

Fields you can include

  • FN — Full name
  • N — Structured name (Last;First;Middle;Prefix;Suffix)
  • TEL — Phone (you can have multiple, with TYPE=CELL, WORK, HOME)
  • EMAIL — Email address (also supports multiple)
  • ORG — Organization / company
  • TITLE — Job title
  • URL — Website
  • ADR — Address (PO Box;Extended;Street;City;State;ZIP;Country)
  • NOTE — Free-form note
  • PHOTO — Headshot (base64-encoded — bloats the QR fast)

The “less is more” rule

Every field you add makes the QR code denser and harder to scan. A vCard with name, phone, email, and website scans cleanly even when printed at business-card size. Stuff in five emails, a 200-word bio, and a base64 photo, and the QR becomes a blob that scanners struggle with.

Recommended minimum: name, one phone, one email, website. Add company and title if relevant. Skip the photo.

Best use cases

  • Conferences and trade shows. Print on the back of your badge. Beats handing out 50 paper cards.
  • Sales reps. Show on phone screen during meetings. Prospect scans, contact saved.
  • Networking events. Tape it on your laptop lid for the whole night.
  • Email signatures. Inline image of the QR. Works for B2B outreach.
  • Restaurants and shops. “Save our contact” sticker by the cash register.

vCard QR vs LinkedIn QR

vCard QRLinkedIn QR
Saves contact directlyYesNo, opens profile only
Works without appYesNeeds LinkedIn app
Adds connectionNoYes (one tap)
Works internationallyYesYes

Use both if you can — vCard for the phone book, LinkedIn for the network. Or design a card with two QRs side by side.

Print quality matters

  • Minimum size: 2.5 cm × 2.5 cm (about 1 inch). Bigger if you have lots of fields.
  • Contrast: Black on white scans the cleanest. Colored QRs lose reliability.
  • Quiet zone: Leave a white margin around the QR equal to ~4 modules. Don’t crowd it.
  • Test before printing. Scan with iPhone Camera and Android Camera before you order 500 cards.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the FN field. The full name field is required in vCard 3.0. Skip it and some scanners reject the contact.
  • Wrong line endings. vCard requires CRLF (\r\n) between lines. Most generators handle this, but if you’re hand-rolling, be careful.
  • Including a 5MB photo. Bloats the QR to unscannable density. Use a separate URL to your headshot instead.
  • Forgetting the country code on the phone. Use +14155552671, not (415) 555-2671.

FAQ

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes. iOS Camera app reads vCard QRs and prompts to add the contact since iOS 11.

Does it work on Android?

Yes. Android Camera (Pixel, Samsung, OnePlus, etc.) reads vCard QRs natively. Older Androids may need Google Lens.

Can I update the contact info later?

No. The QR code is static — the data is baked in. If your phone changes, generate a new QR.

Is a vCard QR secure?

It contains exactly the info you put in it. Anyone who sees the code can save your contact. Don’t include private info you wouldn’t put on a business card.

Can I add my photo?

Technically yes, but it bloats the QR. A better workflow: link to your headshot URL via the PHOTO field with a VALUE=URI tag.

Generate yours in 30 seconds

The QR code generator on LinkMyPrompt has a vCard option. Fill in the fields, download the PNG, print or save to your camera roll. Pair it with a WhatsApp link on your card if texting is the easier first contact for your audience.
