YouTube Subscribe Link with Confirmation Popup (Creator’s Guide)
Adding ?sub_confirmation=1 to your YouTube channel URL triggers a popup that asks the visitor to subscribe. It’s the closest thing to a one-click subscribe button outside YouTube itself, and it converts way better than a plain channel link.
The format
https://www.youtube.com/channel/YOUR_CHANNEL_ID?sub_confirmation=1Replace YOUR_CHANNEL_ID with your actual channel ID (not your handle, not your custom URL — the ID).
How to find your channel ID
Two reliable methods:
Method 1: From YouTube Studio
- Go to studio.youtube.com.
- Click “Settings” in the left sidebar.
- Click “Channel” → “Advanced settings.”
- Your channel ID is listed there. It starts with
UCfollowed by ~22 characters.
Method 2: From your channel page source
- Open your channel on youtube.com in a browser.
- Right-click → “View page source.”
- Search for
"channelId". The value next to it is your ID.
Don’t use @yourhandle URLs. The sub_confirmation parameter only works reliably with /channel/UC... URLs.
What the popup looks like
When someone clicks your link while logged into YouTube, they see a small modal with your channel name and a Subscribe button. One click and they’re subscribed. If they’re not logged in, YouTube asks them to log in first, then shows the popup.
Where to put the link
- Video description. “Subscribe for more videos: [link]” — top of every description.
- Channel banner / “About” section. Pin it.
- Email newsletter. Every email signature for newsletter creators.
- Bio links. Linktree, Beacons, your personal site.
- Cross-platform posts. Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Threads.
- End-card overlay link. When YouTube cards link to your channel, append the parameter.
Mobile considerations
On mobile browsers, the link opens in the YouTube app if it’s installed. The popup shows there too. On mobile web (no app), the popup also works but feels clunkier — users sometimes tap away by accident.
For mobile-first audiences, pair the link with a clear text CTA: “Subscribe to my channel — one tap.”
Custom URLs and handles
YouTube introduced @handles in 2022. Handles look prettier but the sub_confirmation parameter doesn’t behave consistently with them. Use the channel ID URL for the subscribe link, the handle URL for general sharing.
Common mistakes
- Using your handle URL. The popup may not trigger. Use the channel ID format.
- Encoding the URL. Don’t URL-encode the
?sub_confirmation=1. It needs to be readable as a query string. - Linking to a video instead of the channel. Subscribe popup only works on channel URLs.
- Forgetting to test logged-out. Always test in incognito to make sure the login flow works.
What about Subscribe buttons on websites?
YouTube used to offer an embeddable Subscribe button widget. It still exists, but it’s flaky and rarely loads reliably. The sub_confirmation link is more dependable, especially on mobile.
Track click performance
Add a UTM parameter to track where subscribers come from:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC123abc?sub_confirmation=1&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=emailYou won’t see the data inside YouTube Studio (which doesn’t track UTMs), but if you redirect through your own site first, you can. The UTM link generator handles the formatting.
Pair it with a QR for video creators
Print or display the subscribe link as a QR on stream overlays, end screens, business cards, or merch. Generate it with the QR code generator.
FAQ
Does this work for YouTube Music channels?
No. The sub_confirmation parameter is for the main YouTube channel, not Music or Topic auto-channels.
Why doesn’t the popup show for some users?
Most common reasons: they’re not logged in, they’re already subscribed, or they’re on a region/account where YouTube blocks the popup (rare but happens).
Can I trigger the popup from inside a video?
Not from inside the video player. End screens link to the channel and trigger the popup if you append the parameter to that link.
Does it count toward “drove subs from external” in YouTube Studio?
Yes. Subscribers acquired from external links show up in YouTube Studio analytics under “Traffic source: External.”
Does it work for Shorts viewers?
Same link works. Shorts viewers click the link in your channel bio or video description and the popup appears.
Generate yours in one click
The YouTube auto-subscribe link generator takes your channel ID and produces the full link with sub_confirmation appended. Drop it in your bio, your descriptions, and your newsletter.
